Fax numbers showing in imported contacts, even with alphas in fron

I import my contacts into local versions of Outlook 2002 SP3 from an outside
source, using an Excel spreadsheet. I read the previous post about putting
an alpha character in front of fax numbers to suppress the faxes in the To:
dialogue box, and this works great if I am typing in the Outlook user
interface, but when I import the numbers with the alpha in front, it still
thinks they are fax numbers and shows the duplicates. If I edit the
newly-imported contact and type exactly the same text (even copy and paste),
it now suppresses them on the To: dialogue box.

Is there any way to get this to work on imported contacts, or am I stuck
re-running a 3rd-party plug-in every time I import (daily)?

That solution does not apply to imported Contacts. Use the utilities, or
import the numbers into a different field.

Thanks for the quick reply, I figured as much. Sadly, I am already using
many other fields for work-arounds and I'm running out of room (not to
mention confusing the daylights out of my users, who are trying to actually
find fax numbers, too). I'll switch to a different e-mail client or contact
manager instead - I need a product which can treat user input and imported
data with the same rules, to provide some consistency to my organization.
