Fax Install Problem - Os Quirk?

J

James Fern

Hi Folks,

Bought an E Machines w/xp a year ago. Modem wouldn't let me dial out. Did
troubleshooting with them and they sent me a new modem. Not sure that I
installed the new one since I started using DSL before it arrived.

Yesterday, tried to install the fax option. Wouldn't install - couldn't COPY
the files - they were where they were suppossed to be, but the install
couldn't copy them. (I saw on a bb that someone else was having the same
problem - never was resolved there, tho.)

Deinstalled the modem. System froze on reboot while trying to install the
modem - modem gave a beep, but nothing more - just froze. Defragged the
drive. System froze on reboot. Rebotted in safe mode - system recognized the
modem and installed it.

Rebooted in normal mode. System came up okay. Clicked on modem properties.
System froze.

That's where I stand.

Really need to get the fax running - need to send out resumes. Am hesitant
to buy a new modem - suspect that the problem is perhaps a file corruption.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,

me

Unlike most dial-up modems, a DSL modem is not capable
of connecting to fax machines, so you cannot send or receive faxes
directly.

In order to send and receives faxes, you'll need a conventional fax modem
with a live telephone line attached. You cannot use broadband unless you
use a web-base fax service, such as eFax:

Or consider purchasing a regular fax machine and connect it to your phone
line.

You can try using "Add Hardware" in control panel and see if it will fix the
problem but I think you should start in safe mode, uninstall the device and
startup in normal mode to see if it will install properly. Windows XP SP2
seems to much more sensitive to hardware drivers than SP1. As for fax
software, try MightyFax http://www.rkssoftware.com/mightyfax/overview.html .

Forgot to add.. when you can access the device you should load the most
recent update for the driver from the manufacturers site (emachines?)
