Fax configuration

Having just reinstalled xp professional, I can't configure the fax service. I
tried going to device manager-Add windowns components and tried fax services,
but it doesnt work.
It worked before, so it indicates that the modem is ok and compatible.
PLEASE HELP.

2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?

In this case, it sounds like the security data base is corrupted as
documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

Note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the Esentutl.exe utility
and would prefer you try the hotfix.

Thank you, I can find one of the installation files, fxsapi.dll located in
C:\windows\system.32 but I can't find neither the file fxcfgwz.dll or
fxcfgwz.dl_
also when looking for folder i368, I found 3 folders. One of them in
C:\WINDOWS\driver cache which has got data in it and 2 others enpty folders
in C:WINDOWS\system32\reinstallbackups\0002\drivers files and
C:WINDOWS\system32\reinstallbackups\0004\drivers files.
I dont receive any error message, but I remember when I reinstalled windows
that a message came up saying that some files could not be found and some
applications might not work correctly. I have an OEM CD, so I think I am in
real trouble with it.

The I386 folder in question would either be on the original Windows XP
install CD or in C:\Windows\, if you apply XP Service Pack 2; Add/Remove
Windows Components should indicate where it's looking for the files in
needs.
