Post is rather lacking in any meaningful detail.
Did the service ever work?
If so, what steps did you use to disable it?

Thank you for answering my question.

this service had worked before, but for unkown reason it does not work now.

I had tried to turn off this service through control panel's options on
changing windows features. And then turn it on again. but this action did not
revitalize the fax function.

Any other way to fix this problem?

What do you see when you go to Tools > Fax Account...?
And this just happened all of a sudden for no reason? You made no changes to

Dear Russ,

I have a new ThinkPad laptop running factory Vista.
The Fax function hasn't worked yet ; I keep getting the 'Windows Fax and
Scan has stopped working' error message when I try to send a fax.
I tried a couple of 3rd-party fax programs I'd used successfully under XP
(BitWare and PhoneTools) but they didn't work under Vista, so I'm back to
trying to get Windows Fax and Scan to work.

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

How did you configure your Fax Account?
Are you using an analog fax modem on the VHCL?

Dear Russ,
The Fax account seemed to be configured by default -I don't remember doing
it beyond filling out the Sender Information using (I think) the 'Tools'
command.
The modem is the internal IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad modem, and I'm sorry, I don't
know what VHCL means.

Something is not right here. No Fax Account is configured "by default." You
must configure it on first use. Did you find out if your modem is on the

Dear Russ,
Thanks for your response. The Fax Account settings I gave you in my last
post were exactly as they are shown in the Fax Accounts window.
The modem is on the VHCL. The laptop came from the factory with an
integrated ThinkPad Modem and Vista Business installed.
The modem does appear correctly in 'Fax Settings... General' as 'ThinkPad
Modem'.
Querying the Modem via 'Device Manager' 'Properties' 'Diagnostics' tab is
successful.
The Fax Service Status when I first looked just now was 'Started', the
Startup Type is 'Manual'. When I tried to re-start the Service it wouldn't
-the Status column was blank- and I got this "Services" error message: "The
Fax service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop
automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
I re-booted the machine and the Fax Service Status was still blank, but I
was able to start it using the 'Start' button. However, I still can't send a
fax ; the program closes with the same error message in my first post.

Thanks again for your assistance Russ.

Since your modem is on the VHCL, Microsoft owes you an explanation. Contact

Dear Russ,
Thanks for trying for me.
I called Microsoft and their response was that as it's OEM software they
won't support it, although they will troubleshoot a case for $A80.00. They
suggested I call the laptop suppler ; Lenovo/IBM will NOT support software
problems -they do hardware only. That leaves only the store where I bought
the machine, and I think it's a bit unreasonable to expect them to
troubleshoot an esoteric Vista problem. However, they've undertaken to give
it a try and I'll let you know what happens.

Dear Russ,
Thanks for your response.
When I tried to re-start the Service it
wouldn't
-the Status column was blank- and I got this "Services" error message:
"The
Fax service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop
automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
I re-booted the machine and the Fax Service Status was still blank, but I
was able to start it using the 'Start' button. However, I still can't
send a
fax ; the program closes with the same error message in my first post.

Thanks again for your assistance Russ.

I never established the cause, but after upgrading from Office 2000 to a

If you were using Outlook 2000 in IMO mode, it contained a very nasty little
fax program that likely prevented WFS from being able to initialize your
modem.

Thanks Russ,
I was using OL2000 in IMO mode, so your explanation could well be the one.
Under WXP I was able to use Windows's fax program, as well as BitWare Fax and
PhoneTools Fax. Vista is a very different beast.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi all

I have a couple of questions and want to know if any of you can help.

1. I'm using Vista small business and was able to send faxes through
WFS and now it keep telling me that fax cannot be send due to
unexpected error. I've already checked the modem and it is working
perfectly. I used to get the same error after i use dial-up when my
dsl isn't working but once i restarted the computer, i could fax
again. This time for some reason no matter what i do, i can't send fax
anymore. Can anyone give me some ideas?

2. I'm working for a small company that used to use WinFax to send out
faxes and after we've upgraded to Vista Small Business, I was told
WinFax is not available for this version. Do any of you know what
other Fax Server software we can use?

greatly appreciated!!!!

Hi Sunny,

On our website we have a list of fax software that's been tested with
our hardware;

http://www.mainpine.com/software.html

Most of this is probably to 'high end' for the requirement... but it's
been through our test process which might save you some headaches.
