My Favorites Folder list suddenly changed and some of my "favorites" were
removed from the list and icons for other Outlook features now appear. I
cannot remove the icons for Contacts, Calendar, Notes or Tasks. I can drag
folders into the Favorites list as before, but nothing I do will remove or
change the order of the links to other components.

I tried renaming the xml file in the Outlook folder and it did rebuild the
Favorites Folder, but these icons STILL appear in the Favorite Folders list.

When I click these icons, the viewing pane changes to the item I clicked but
the navigation pane still displays the heading "Mail" as if I were still
viewing email.

Thanks!

Sounds like you have a corrupted Navigation Pane. Reset it by;
Start-> Run; outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Thank you for the quick response Roady.

In the meantime, I discovered that I had an open copy of Outlook.exe running
under Applications in the Task Manager (even though it appeared that Outlook
was closed).

I closed the application in the Task Manager and restarted Outlook. It
picked up the "new" Favorites folder file that I had previously recreated and
now all is well--for the time being, anyway! I'll keep your note about
repairing the Nav Pane.

Thanks again!
