Favorites Bye Bye

I opened IE6 tonight and all my favorites were gone, just two generic links
to media and something else.

History was also cleared.

Is there some kind of x-ware (spy, ad, hijack, etc) that replaces the
favorite file name with another or are my favorites really gone?

They are probably still there but the Registry entry has been changed.
Look for the Favorites folder and you will probably find it with all
the individual favorites intact.

You can change the value of Favorites in the Registry in these
two keys: (ignore the second if the value is not there)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

Check the c:\windows\favorites folder. It may all be there.
