Faulty HP Cartridge

B

~Bonnie~

Hi--This is my first post here.

I bought a color HP cartridge several months ago at a large drug chain
store.
I seldom use/thus seldom replace cartridges, however this one--in
following the directions was "missing" a protective "tape" that the
instructions indicated to remove. At any rate--the printer doesn't
print--I assume it's a "dry" cartridge.
The instruction form gives me a phone number in Idaho to call--I'm in
CA--I don't wish to do this.
I went to the HP internet site & was only further confused.
I also attempted to call the 877 number in my owners book and it is a
"Sex Talk" number. In attempting to find an 800 type # thru the phone
operator there were too many to chose from concerning a relatively
simple question.

My problem is, I believe have a faulty cartridge, yet doubt the store
will honor the situation, as I waited a few months before opening the
cartridge. I'm not certain if I kept the receipt.
Does anyone happen to have an 800 type # that may help me with this
issue?
Many thanks--note here or to my addy is appreciated. Sincerely, Bonnie

Sorry can't help very much except to say that if the protective tape was
missing the printhead in the cartridge will have dried out. If getting a
replacement is not practical then you can try to recover the cartridge as
follows:
Wash the printhead under a cold water tap just drizzling (the printhead is the
shiny piece at the base of the cartridge) then press the printhead onto a piece
of absorbent paper (kitchen towel) placed on a flat bench on top of several
sheets of newspaper to avoid staining the bench. Do this several times, if the
cartridge recovers you will start to see a pattern absorbed into the towel
(black for the black cartridge and three colours for the colour cartridge).
Under no circumstances should you touch the printhead with your fingers, the
oils from fingers can damage the printhead. Wipe the cartridge (not the
printhead portion) dry with a paper towel and try in the printer, if you get
some improvement but it is still not perfect then try the above procedure again
until (hopefully) it comes right. There is no guarantee that this will work but
often it does.
I am assuming the printer (model not specified) has two cartridges, one black
and the other colour. Does the printer fail to print in black and colour or
just one of these?
By the way most cartridges have a use by date, if you are within that you
should be able to get a replacement if you can find the receipt.
Good luck
Tony

Hi Bonnie,

The person you probably want to direct this query to is Bob Headrick.

His email is:

(e-mail address removed)

He is on this newsgroup regularly and may respond to you directly, but
if not, he work with HP in their ink cartridge division and will
probably know who you need to reach.

Was this an original HP cartridge or a store brand? A "real" HP cartridge
would have the protective tape, although I have seen a case where a retailer
put a returned (empty) cartridge back on the shelf. If original HP you can
call 1-800-HPINVENt for warranty service. First check the warranty date on the
cartridge as shown at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bua02014.
The cartridges usually have a warranty date two years from the manufacture
date.

If the cartridge was a store brand return it to the store for a replacement.

What printer do you have and which cartridge? You may be successful recovering
the cartridge by running a cleaning cycle from the toolbox.

I have seen many counterfeight cartridges in market. A "HP" cartridge with
no tape is sure a counterfeight. I would suggest to ~Bonnie~ to return the
cartridge to the shop. I'm sure they haven't sold only one counterfeight, so
they *will* understand! Color cartridges work only 1 out of 5 !!!
