What the fastest PC-compatible CPU is depends on if you're measuring
per-core, or total speed.

In the speed per core, it is a tie between the Core 2 Duo E6850 and the Core
2 Quad Extreme Edition QX6850.

In total speed, the QX6850 is the fastest.

The dual core Xeon 5160 and the Quad Core Xeon 5365 are approximately the
same asn the E6860 and QX6850 respectively, although in practice they work
with a memory controller that requires FB-DIMMs and as a result are a little
slower than the comparable Core 2 Duo/Quad.

What type of CPU? 2.4 GHz could be an old Socket 478 P4, or a Socket 775
Core 2 Duo Q6600, plus many other chips, including some from AMD.

Please post the type of mainboard. (If you know the specific model, the
board's manufacturer may have a CPU compatibility list online, such as the
one at support.asus.com.)

At stock speeds, yes, but the E6850 will probably overclock easier than the
Quad due to less overall heat. Lots of people get 4.0ghz out of E6850.

True, and the E6850 is a lot cheaper.

Once you add in overclocking, I wonder whether an X6800 (with the unlocked
multiplier) might not still be the champ; the slight stock speed boost from
the faster memory and 70mhz of clock speed is very small.
