FarCry on Win98 with 1GB memory

If I could just install XP, I'd do it. I have over 100 applications
installed. It would take me a month to get my machine back to its
current level of functionality. I'm not willing to go thru that pain.

The next time I build a machine from scratch, I'll load XP. But this
hardware is more than sufficient for now. This machine will stay with
98SE. I have Bill Gates and his wonderful invention called, The
Registry, to thank for this. Applications should NOT need to be
reinstalled just because the OS has been. That damnable registry is the
bain of computer users today....

I installed XP as an upgrade to 98SE and didn't have to reinstall a thing.
All 250+ apps (mix of DOS and Windows) worked fine after the upgrade. I
have no old peripherals that don't have XP drivers so that may have had
something to do with it. In about an hour and a half XP was installed and
the only difference in my system was the desktop scheme and the fact that
the computer ran a little slower, which XP will do on any given system.

I read an article recently about how MS went through great pains to
make xp backwards compatible - work with old (& quirky) applications.
Word has it that things may not go quite so smoothly (in a backwards
compatibility sense) on the next release of windows os (codenamed
longhorn).

Good one DrWho. Google should have it on record now and others will
be able to enjoy your solution...

So, after playing a lot of FarCry with only 512MB, and then playing it
with 1GB (even tho windows still thinks there's only 512), I DO now
notice a VERY significant improvement in FarCry.

There are talks that a Dx9-capable video card will be required for the 3D
desktop functions...
