Fan for my nVidia 7800 GS?

Johanna

I wanted to try installing the Zalman fan that I bought a few months back.
It was meant to replace the rather noisy fan on my graphics card nVidia
7800 GS.

I bought the fan while in a terrible hurry at a nation-wide chain (UK)
called Maplins.
On the box, I couldn't see my graphics card model listed as either
compatible or incompatible with the fan, so I asked a shop assistant to
find out.

After asking more experienced collegues, contacting their call centre
etc, etc he still couldn't say yes or no (typical!!!), so I thought I'd
take a chance and buy it. I didn't have time to research or check online
at the time.
For the record, that was Maplin's in Kingston-upon-Thames. Arrrgh!

Well today after taking off the existing fan from the 7800 card, it
turned out that it did NOT fit! After an hour I had to give up.

It's been at least three months, so I cannot take it back - guess it is
a write-off. (let me know if you are interested in buying for £10 - it's
a Zalman Ultracool)

I am JINXED when it comes to graphics cards!
Everything that I do in connection with them goes wrong. So I wanted to
ask in this group instead and I will definitely follow the advice I get.
What fan is suitable, a quiet one...?

Right now I am using my old-ish nVidia card which isn't ideal for heavy
Photoshop etc.... So ideally I want to get a new card tomorrow in
central London or the nearby Maplin's (despite all). I suppose I can
order online as well, although I probably woudn't get that until Tuesday.

So what fan should I get for this card? Max budget £40, ideally cheaper,
ideally from Maplin's to save me having to go into town for this.

One of the video card groups might be another place to ask.

7800GS is pretty new, and there may not be anything specific
for it here. You really need to be able to check the mechanical
layout drawings, to be absolutely sure something is going to
work. According to the sidebar on the left, "Accelero S2"
should be available in Oct06, for 7800GS AGP.

http://www.arcticcooling.com/vga1.php

On this page 7800GS is listed as AGP, and that means your card
would have the HSI translator chip on it (to convert a PCI
Express GPU to run with an AGP slot). That tends to
distort the layout of the video card, and make finding an
aftermarket solution that much harder. The 6600 AGP was
hard to find a cooler for, for that reason. Some Zalmans
would rest too high on a 6600 AGP, to be able to close the
side panel of the computer.

The backside of the EVGA 7800GS AGP is here. You can see
the PCI Express coupling caps in the exact middle of the
card. That implies to me the HSI is somewhere underneath
the original fan hub, and the GPU must be located on the
right hand end of the card.

The list at the bottom of this page excludes the 7800GS,
so maybe your card is a tough one to fit:

But someone in a video card groups, like
alt.comp.periphs.videocards.nvidia , is going to be able
to give you a better answer.

Hope you didn't damage the original assembly.
