Family Tree / Genealogy

Hello,

Would anyone know of a good sample genealogy database or perhaps tutorial?
I would like to try and setup a family tree database for my personal use but
have been having issues trying to understand how to setup this type of the
hierarchical information and how to create reports to display this type of
information.

Since it is the same principal as that of a BOM, I downloaded the BOM sample
database from the MVPS website but it was created on an old version of access
and I can't get it functional on 2003.

Any help is appreciated, as always!

Thank you,

Daniel

If you want to use Access for Genealogy purposes, rather than a
dedicated genealogy program, I suggest that you download the free
version of Legacy Family Tree, and study the database structure, as
Legacy uses a typical Access structure. You may even find it much
easier to simply use Legacy (or another free genealogy program) rather
than developing your own.

I personally prefer to use RootsMagic, which is not free, but easly
worth the few dollars it costs.

Mr. Hoffpauir, I see you responding alot and wanted to ask you why you
recommend RootsMagic over the many other genealogy software products. I am
working on entering some data into another program I was demoing but I don't
really care for the program so far. I want to be able to print pedigree
reports and put them in the front of a family cookbook I'm doing. I am wary
of posting any family info on the web, and putting someone's info at risk, or
compromising their identity. Thanks in advance for your time!
Thanks,J

There are USENET databases, and websites, devoted to genealogy. This
newsgroup is not one of them, and you will not find one via Microsoft's
online interface -- the newsgroups accessible from that interface all deal
with Microsoft software products. And, although you might deduce from the
name that this is just "access to the Internet" or "access to newsgroups",
this newsgroup is for questions and answers about Microsoft Access database
software, so it will only be by happenstance if you get the answers you need
here.

Thanks for the public spanking. I was doing a search on Microsoft online to
see if you had any templates in Excel or Access to do a basic family tree and
that is how I came across this Mr. Hoffpair. I will be more mindful of the
group focus, I will look elsewhere.

That was not a "public spanking." It wasn't even an "admonishment." It was
an attempt to be helpful, as your followup post did not appear to deal with
templates in Microsoft Access, and you were highly unlikely to get the
answer you need in this newsgroup.

It's no big deal to us to have a few off-topic questions, but it can be a
big deal to the people who post in the wrong newsgroup, expecting an answer,
and just get "silence". If no one replies to their post, it can be very
frustrating.
