One box called EMACH is an eMachines desktop PC wired to LinkSys WRT54G
(updated firmware yesterday) and runs XP Media Center Edition Version 2002
Service Pack 2. It functions well on the internet. The other box called VAIO
is a Sony VAIO laptop wireless to the router, and runs XP Home Edition
Version 2002 Service Pack 2. It functions well on the internet. Both boxes
have Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP checked. Both boxes are in workgroup named
WORKGROUP . EMACH can ping VAIO, but VAIO cannot ping EMACH.

Run of cpsserv.cmd on EMACH yields:

Start CPSServ V1.10 - EMACH

Firewalls are off on both boxes. This is all I know (except for looking at
the registry keys suggested by Chuck and seeing nothing untoward). Please
advise and thanks.

EMACH is not running either the Server or Workstation service. These are
essential services.

VAIO, running XP Home, does not have Remote Registry, so the errors "... Unable
to open Service Control Manager database ..." are normal.

Thank you for your attention, but both Server and Workstation are set to
"started, automatic, local system". Now what?

Hmm. PSService (an acquired Microsoft utility) says neither is running. Verify
it, first. Run from the command window on EMach.
sc query lanmanserver
sc query lanmanworkstation

If SC says that it's running, shoot the moon and look for LSP / Winsock
corruption. Be persistent on this one.
