Failed updates causes BSOD

On Sunday I allowed 4 updates (KB941202, KB890830, KB939653, KB933729) to be
made and a while later let the reboot proceed. Ever since, I get "STOP:
c0000135 unable to locate kernel32.dll..." and cannot get the boot to
complete.

I have managed to get on via a CD and recovery console. I've discovered the
kernel32.dll is in c:\windows\system32 and also c:\windows\system32\dllcache.

Also browsed "c:\windows\windowsupdate.log" and saw the 4 updates failed.
There were several messages that seemed to imply confusion between "client
invoking reboot system" and "client for directive reboot pending". In any
event, there was "FATAL: out of proc datastore process exited with error
0xc000142 before signalling ready event" and "FATAL: failed to get session
from datastore, error=0x80248011" followed by "Serviceexit [exit
code=0x240001]".

I'm thinking all this left my ssytem corrupted and now it won't reboot in
safe mode or otherwise, except this limited DOS recovery mode. Can I undo the
failed updates and get back to my prior state? Or possibly reapply them from
DOS?

Good News!! (for me)

I discovered that even though kernel32.dll was listed normally in the
c:\windows\system32 directory, it could not be copied, renamed, printed, or
deleted. I ran CHKDSK which "found and fixed one or more errors". After that,
kernel32.dll was no longer visible in that directory.

I copied it in from c:\windows\system32\dllcache.

Finally, completed a reboot and so far things look normal, maybe even a bit
faster.
