Failed boots after windows update

My comp worked well before the incident. Last night I
went to windows update and downloaded about 10 updates (a
mix of critical updates and recommended ones). After
dl/install and reboot, i get bsod with stop line
0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x80595A99, 0xF8019B64,
0x00000000)

I tried system restoring to a couple of different points
and all have failed. Now when i try system restoring, it
says something like "system restore is unable to protect
your comp. restart your comp and run restore again."

I've searched the stop code on google, and msn knowledge
base and none of those cases seem to describe my case.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
P3 800Mhz
512 MB SDRAM
80GB with plenty of free space
ATI 8500 Radeon

Additional Info:
BSOD happens about 4 seconds after I see my desktop.
I can access safe mode.
