Defender failes to remove KaZaA, iMesh, WhenU.Save & Altnet. There are
several resource files in C:/system volumn information...(Hidden of
course)...One such entry is.. C:\System Volume
Information\_restore{119D9D9E-FEE7-415B-81B6-B2EAD5D12F16}\RP1598\A0212306.exe->(CABSfx)->\Disk1\data1.cab->(ishld#0029)
How do I remove these? Why do they keep failing? They are all classified
as medium/low #4 alert level.

I already looked to use Cntl Panel - remove programs...

See Microsoft's response in the Announcements newsgroup. Subject
includes the error message number ending with "1001". In it I learned
that Microsoft acknowledges that WD can not delete a file within an
archive. I also learned that you can turn off searching within archives
by going to Tools | General Settings, Then scrolling down to "Scan
inside Archives" and uncheck the box.

Thanks for your reply Tex:
Is that something I would want to do? Are the files needed or could they be
harmful...which is why they were identified? Unchecking the box will in
effect "ignore" the items that are archived...are archived files a concern?

The items WD found were related to several Screen savers I had saved but
never used. So, I deleted the actual files or let WD delete them. The
copies in the System Restore files I am not too worried about. So I am
not worried about WD skipping them in the future. I will need to
recheck the box sometime in the future to see if any other spy ware has
crept into my Zip or System Restore files.

Should I then try and delete these files manually?....if I can get into them
from the dos prompt?

The paths you mention are in the system restore area.

If you believe your system is stable and in good shape--you can purge all
old restore points and that will get rid of these files.

To do that, right click My Computer and choose Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore on all drives
Click Apply.

Then UNCHECK "Turn off System Restore on all drives
and click apply. You will need to wait between these steps while the
process completes.

A further scan should show no spyware in the System restore area.

Spyware files in the System Restore area are not active threats--there is a
possibility that they could become active if the restore point was used, but
otherwise they are safe to leave in place.

Thank you Bill:

I can then uncheck restore points...run scan...and start new restore points
if I wish to get rid of these files...

Thank you folks for your help

Hi,..In order to gain access to the System Volume Information directory you
have to Reset your Attributes on that directory to R/W under security. By
going into safe mode F8 at boot up,... by the way I had the same problem
that's how I solved my problem everything is okay now,... but remember to set
things back to the way they were once you have finished the scan,... enjoy

Thanks Lorne:
I applied Bill Sanderson's suggestion last night & ran another scan. It
came up clean. I also rechecked the system restore feature & even set an
extra one (nameing it for the day...Feb 19 2006).

With your suggestion...I now have 2 ways to address the issue should it come
up again. Thank you for for your input.

And thank you all for helping me.

Best wishes to all & safe'puting....

Hi Bernon
just remember it is your Root Directory Drive C:\,.... If you ever do or
restore depending on the restore date you could reinstall all the unwanted
Spyware because the files are still there in the System Volume Information
Directory you probably already know this,.. have a great wonderful day

Hi Lorne:
The reset points I'd use are now new ones (after purging the old unwanted
files...)...I hope I won't need them for a longggg time, and thereby having
many restore points to go to...

Thank you
