Fading out an audio track

G

Guest

I am backing up a Donna Summer CD. It lasts for 74 minutes or so. I would like to copy the music from a track to fill up the rest of the 6 minutes

My problem is that I cannot fade out the music. As a result, it stops abruptly at the 6 minute mark

Is there any way, I can fade it in and out and have that extra 6 minutes of music

Please help.

If it is an mp3 track you want to trim, and it is shorter than 7 minutes in
length, the freeware version of mp3Trim will do the job:
http://www.logiccell.com/~mp3trim/

You don't need to actually "install" mp3Trim- just drop it in a folder
somewhere and launch it from there.

Thanks for the tip. I am backing up a CD onto a CD-R in .cda format using WMP 9.0

So you're doing a direct copy of the CD. If you want to manipulate the
files before burning them to CD-R and still maintain the original audio
quality, you'll need to rip them to your hard drive as WAV files and edit
them before burning them to the CD-R. Any WAV editor should be able to do
what you want. I use the WAV editor which came with my Nero software, but
this freeware app is highly recommended by many in the alt.music.mp3
newsgroup: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about.php

dear ian

Thanks. As a newbie, I have been unable to convert the audio files to .wav or .mp3. WMP 9.0 does neither saving them as .wma. Neither does Sonic Record It which is what i got with my laptop.

I have Audicity but it needs .wav files

I saw another post in which you recommended dbPowerAmp. I will try that. If not, I will once again seek your help

Thanks and regard

Do yourself a favour and abandon WMP for anything but playing your audio or
video files. WMP is problematic for extracting (ripping) audio from CDs and
it is also problematic for burning to CD-R.

To rip audio from CD to WAV or MP3, use a proper ripper. Here are two
outstanding rippers which are both freeware:

1) AudioGrabber: http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/ (This has just
recently become freeware. I paid $30 for it over two years ago and was
pleased with my purchase.)

2) CDex: http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/ (As easy to use and perhaps even
better than AudioGrabber.)

To burn to CD-R, please have a look for the burning software which came
bundled with your CD burner. It's probably either Nero or EasyCD Creator.
Either is infinitely better than Windows Media Player. If you can't find
either software disc, let me know. Other freeware alternatives exist, most
of which will cause you far fewer headaches than WMP.

Ian.

Avoid the headaches and use CDex. Get it free at http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/

Once again thanks Ian.
One last question - if I already have an audio file in .wma format, how
can I convert it to .wav or .mp3 ( BTW I haven't started using CDex as yet
so this might be a premature question - not knowing if Cdex can convert it
to .wav)

You're going through more trouble than six minutes of Donna Summer music may
be worth, but I do understand that it's often worth it just to get an
understanding of how things work so that you can use that knowledge in the
future.

You can convert wma files to mp3 using dBpowerAMP Music Converter with the
wma codec (also available at this site.) http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Rather than installing yet another piece of software though, you might be
better off just deleting the wma files of the Donna Summer CD and using CDex
to rip that CD to mp3 or wav, depending on what you want to do to the files
before you burn them. If you rip to wav you can use Audacity to manipulate
that last six minutes of music, and you'll preserve *all* of the original
fidelity. If you rip to high-bitrate mp3, you can trim the final track with
MP3Trim and really, no human ear will ever notice any fidelity difference
because you ripped to mp3 instead of wav.

Ian.

Ian: I am beginning to agree with you. But as you pointed out...Something for the future

BTW with CDex, I cannot hear any audio. The track seems to be playing. I installed Adapted Aspi 4.7 ( I am using WXP Home) but to no avail.

I get a message
------------
CDex version :1.5
Disk ID :1009C40
Volume ID :19FBD
OS Version :Windows XP (Version 5.1 build 2600 Service Pack 1
Aspi Manager :Adaptec; Adaptec's ASPI Layer 4.70

Detailed drive info Ha:01 Id: 00 Lun:00
Device Name: "_NEC DVD+RW ND-5100A
Drive does not support MM
------------

Obviously being a Dell product there is no support, neither is there any support at the NEC site because it is an OEM product

Can you help by telling me what that means? Does not support MMC. I did read about it but cannot find anything about DVD+RWs and MMC

Thanks, WH

I'm sorry to say that I really don't know what that means. I would
recommend that you post this question to the "alt.music.mp3 newsgroup,"
where you will find several very helpful and knowledgeable individuals who
are more experienced than I am. It's a much busier newsgroup than this one
so you're likely to get feedback from a number of people, and CDex is used
by many posters there- that's where I first heard of it. I'll watch the
thread in that newsgroup to see what they suggest.

I just noticed that you're posting to this newsgroup via the Microsoft web
page. Now would be a good time to configure your Outlook Express to access
your ISP's news server. It will make participating in other newsgroups,
like alt.music.mp3, much easier. You *could* post via the Google interface
if you like,
http://groups.google.ca/groups?q=alt.music.mp3&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en but
OE makes it much easier. (Very slight learning curve with immediate
reward!)

Don't give up!

Thanks Ian. I am going to crack this .wma to .mp3/.wav issue. It has gone beyond the 6 minutes I was interested in. A whhole new issue that I never bothered about earlier

I'll keep you posted in case I receive a reply re: DVD+RW and CDex as well as the MMC support issue

I will use the alt.music.mp3 group. Thanks for the Google link. It works

I found this fantastic editor alled Goldwave which workes with .wma files. Evan for a newbie like me it was easy. It is only a 2MB download

I was able to fade out the track like a dream. No mucking around with CDex and ASP

I'm glad to know you've had a breakthrough! I've never used Goldwave and
had no idea it worked on wma files, but it is often recommended by "dadiOH,"
one of the alt.music.mp3 resident experts. And if you've got AudioGrabber
up and running, you may as well dump CDEx- who needs two rippers? I still
use AudioGrabber on my old W98SE system- installed it when it was a pay-for
program and before I discovered CDEx. AudioGrabber has just recently become
freeware though, and because you can plug in the LAME encoder, it provides
rips of outstanding quality.

It's great when efforts and learning curves FINALLY pay off, isn't it?

Ian.

Been using GoldWave since about 1995. Congratulations on such an excellent
product choice...
