extra calendar and contacts

I am running outlook 97 on exchange 5.5. we had a crash
and have been restoring mailboxes - what is happening
though is that when the mailbox is restored it is coming
up with a contacts, contacts1, calendar, calendar1,
inbox, tasks, tasks1, outbox and sent items. the items
that have a 1 behind them display properly but are empty -
the items that dont have a 1 behind them contain the
proper items, but display as messages instead of a
calendar or contact item. any ideas how i can merge the
2 together so it presents correctly and then delete the
items that have the 1 behind it - i have tried to delete
those items and it will not let me. any help is GREATLY
appreciated.

Were you doing brick-level restores? If so, note that that is definitely not
the recommended way to perform disaster recovery...you need to restore the
full Exchange server (directory and stores) from tape to a recovery server.
If it isn't too late to restart this, see
http://www.microsoft.com/Exchange/techinfo/administration/55/BackupRestore.asp
and http://mail.tekscan.com/nomailboxes.htm.

If not, see whether you can export out to PST, delete & recreate the
mailbox, and selectively import from the PST file. Not sure if it's going to
fix the item type/class; I doubt it, so you're really better off with the
disaster recovery whitepaper listed above.
