External USB key board for Laptop with windows XP

Hello
I am not sure if I could post this question at this forum. sorry if I am
wrong. I tried to connect an External key board (PS/2) to my laptop via PS/2-
USB adaptor, after disconnecting the original key board from the laptop (
Sony Vaio NV-105). (I had spilt tea on the keyboard and ever since has been
causing me a severe headache).
Anyway, XP does not recognize this external keyboard, stating- "one of your
USB devices has malfunctioned and is not recognized". However, the driver for
this external keyboard appears fine and "working properly" in the device
manager.
Does anyone know where the problem is/ solutions? Any help would be much
appreciated- unable to find replacement keyboard for this model and it is a
fantastic laptop otherwise

You can try a straight PS/2 keyboard and see if that works. If not, then
I'm sorry but your tea spillage damaged the motherboard and not just
the keyboard. There's no way you can fix this yourself. You'll need to
call the laptop mftr. for repair/replacement.

Sometimes these PS2/USB adapters don't work properly. You might try using
an actual USB keyboard. If you're out of USB ports, PC cards that add 4
ports are inexpensive, as are hubs.

If you're unsure about purchasing the USB keyboard, take the laptop to a
shop that will let you try an open USB keyboard from some other system, on
the basis that if it works you'll buy one.
