External mouse disconnected

I downloaded the new version of Windows : 8 and when my Dell portable
computer restarted, the mouse was disconnected ; I disinstalled it but the
mouse is still disconnected. What can I do ? It looks as though my windows xp
version has been erased at the same time!!!!!!

Did the Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser indicate that your mouse was supported
in Windows 7?

Here's how to get to Windows 7 if you have Windows XP. (You need to
erase your hard disk first.)
