External Hard Drive Buffalo Drivestation Vista will not pick it up

Hi There

I have Vista Premium. I purchased a Buffalo Drivestation (500gb) Buffalo say
it is Vista Compatible but my computer does not recognize it. Plugged it
into my XP machine and that was fine. Anyone know what I am doing wrong
vista picks up my other external drives ok.
Any help would be appreciated as I have tried everywhere for a drive but to
no avail.

Have you gone into Administrative Tools> Computer Management and looked under
Disk Management to see if the drive is recognized there? You must partition,
format and assign a drive letter before you can see and use a new drive.

Hi

Thanks for your quick reply.
Yes I have tried admin tools but no drive.
How can I format drive if I cannot see it?

Ouch!
Different USB port? Different cable?
Take it back and try another unit or different brand?

What actually happens when you plug the drive into Vista? Any error
messages?

Hi again

Its a combo drive firewire or usb.
Buffalo still say its compatible

For absolutely nothing to happen is an unusual response indeed.
Makes me think of a bad USB cable or a bad USP port. Can you
try the drive with a different cable, and try different USB
ports on the same machine? Especially if it has ports on both
front and back.

Yes the drive did work on my other xp machine.

Hi

Pleased to say I now have it up and working at long last. I found that the
firewire port needed updating and so did the usb ports for some reason.

Thanks for all your help
