External floppy drive

I recently purchased an external floppy drive.
It is a Macally brand intended for the Mac but I find that it works
fine on my HP a600y with Windows XP.

I have used it to read (and format) standard 3.5 inch floppies, 1440
KB.
Also I find that it reads OK a Microsoft formatted floppy; they call
it DMF format I think.

But I would like to use it to format floppies to FDformat and also 2M
format.
Why do I want to format floppies of such type ??
The answer is that I have images of such floppies with personal data
from some years ago.
To restore such images into a floppy I need to have the floppy
formatted to that format prior to the restoration.

All my efforts, with the Macally, to format in these out of the
ordinary formats have failed.

All comments will be appreciated.

You need the engine and support files for fdformat to work with
fdformatted data. There are 2 fdformats: one for DOS and the other for
Linux. You do NOT want the Linux verstion; it's a low lever formatter
and doesn't give you the increased storage you're trying to read, nor
the sliding sectors of the DOS program.

Here's one link about it:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2239/fdformat-1?a=view

Or you could use this page; scroll down to the DOS area and fdformat.
http://www.midpec.com/software.html
It's a .tar.gz file though, so you might not be able to get it.

That should be enough to allow you to search for it, though. Just
remember, the Linux fdformat is different from what you're looking for.

Up to 4 lines of advert is considered acceptable as part of the sig. Given
that: it is not unacceptable for a poster to want to ensure that his advert
is seen. Not all newsreaders strip the sig anyway.

So what's your problem?

He seems to have decided to appoint (annoint?) himself as
moderator/police for a few newsgroups.
