External Drives Not Reccognized after Upgrade to SP2 - Random

I upgraded my emachines laptop that I bought with XP Home and Service Pack 1
to Service Pack 2 about 3 weeks ago. I use 2 external hard drives that I
daisey chain to gether from my firewire port of my laptop. Befeore the
upgrade both drives would show up in my computer. Since I upgraged I have
been experiencing problems. At first both drives showed up, then none. At
times I can get one or the other and have been able to get both to show up.
Then when I shut the system down and go back in som etime later they're gone.

In device manager I have been seeing only one of the externals showing up
and it has a yellow exclimation mark on it. When I delete it restart the
computer it is just gone. It doesn't recognize either.

I contacted the PC manufacturer and they can not figure out what is wrong.
The manufacture of the hard drives (Maxto) instructed me to try the USB2 port
and another system to see if it works, which I will do. I didn't have this
issue prior to upgrading to SP2 and I think I read somewhere about a
Microsoft hot fix for this issue. Not sure.

I don't know what to do and I'm getting nowhere. I'd appreciate any help I
can get.

Thanks.

I suspect that the drivers for the drives are not SP2 compatible and that
updating them would fix the problem (but this is just a guess).

Are there any other drives attached to the system (such as mapped network
drives, USB drives, etc)? Have you tried using the "diskmgmt.msc" applet to
see the drives (this will often show up if a drive isn't able to have a
reserved drive letter set for it because of conflicts).

No other drives attached. I spoke to a Maxtor tech and they didn't say
anything about being concerned the drivers were not SP2 compatible.

Haven't tried the "diskmgmt.msc" applet. Not sure what this is.
