Exporting and importing Favorites

Ken Bowles

I have tried to import Favorites which I had exported from another PC. I
got an error message that the file is not a valid bookmark file. Both
machines are using IE6.0 SP1 and other updates. I used the wizard to export
and attempt to import the bookmarks. The file I am trying to import is
"bookmark.htm" (without the quotes). To test the possibility that the file
from the other PC might be corrupt, I exported the favorites on the same PC.
When I tried to import them on the PC from which I exported them, I got the
same error message. I can double click the files and they open very nicely
and I can see all the favourites and can click on the bookmarked page and it
opens perfectly. Why won't the favourites import?

O/S Windows XP Professional (importing machine)
O/S Windows 2000 Professional (exporting machine)

Thanks,
Ken

I exported them from one PC to a file (bookmark.htm) which I e-mailed to
myself. I saved Bookmark.htm in "My Documents" on the hard drive (C:\) of
another PC. As I mentioned, I have also tried to export and then import on
the same PC. I saved the export to "My Documents" as well (after I moved
the first export). And, they would still not import.

Thanks,
Ken

Zipping the file up didn't help.
I did try the URL, but the instructions won't work with XP Pro. I was signed
on as the administrator and had full rights. I used the Run and typed cmd.
I got C:\Documents and Settings> for the prompt and I could not get to the
root (C:\). Typing any of the suggestions just returned an error message,
indicating it was not a valid command.

What is really puzzling, at least to me, is that I can open the file
bookmark.htm and can see all the favourites and even use them.
Double-clicking one of the favourites will open the site. I guess I could
open each one and then save the URL to the favourites again. Seems like
lots of work. I wonder if the Exchange server is messing up the file?

I got C:\Documents and Settings> for the prompt

What did you try? cd \ should do that; however to go where PA Bear
suggested you should enter:
cd %USERPROFILE%\Desktop

I wonder if the Exchange server is messing up the file?

I wonder if the Exchange bookmark file format is compatible
with the IE6 bookmark file format, assuming that that is what
you are implying by this reference to Exchange (your first).

Try doing a Google Groups search in the Exchange newsgroups?
Otherwise I would try exporting Favorites from IE, analyse its file
format, figure out what the difference is between the format that you
have that you want to import and then make the necessary modifications
to make it look as if it had been exported from IE.

Good luck

You seem to have covered this by exporting/importing on the same PC
but please just check in the url that PA Bear supplied, as you
e-mailed the file.
This is my standard response, which is similar:

"Not a valid bookmark file" error
Created by saving an emailed favorites export using File-Save

Open the page in Notepad and remove this first line:

<!-- saved from url=(0022)http://internet.e-mail -->

BINGO!!!!

I have transferred my favs three times now using the double-click and
save method. Thank you Alan, that did the trick for me.
