explorer repeatedly crashes without error message on startup

When I boot up, even in safe mode, once all the processes have loaded
the desktop and taskbar dissappear and then reappear a few seconds
later, over and over again. I looked in the task manager and it shows
explorer.exe showing up and disappearing along with the desktop and
taskbar. No error messages are displayed at all.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can remedy this?
