Explorer messed up?

Untitled DocumentMy system has 8 hard drives, most internal ata and a few
external usb2
drives.(1.3 terrabytes, I like space)

Problem occurs when I open windows explorer and try to copy a file from one
hd
to another hd.

The screen immediately locks up, and the only way I found to free things up
is to bring up task manager and end process of DrWatson.

Windows falls to a blank desktop, slowly loading the desktop icons.

In a period of 10 seconds, or so, the system is back to normal appearance
minus a few systray icons.

The computer works fine otherwise, using xp pro sp1.

I loaded an old ghost image and explorer works fine with that image, so I
know it is not a hd problem.

Is there a way to reload windows explorer?

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this problem?

TIA

I have what I believe to be exactly the same thing. Searching old
postings show a variety of people reporting their windows explorer
just crashes. But thus far nobody has said anything I've seen to
find a way to fix this.

I'm guessing you will find the same problem with anything that uses
the windows explorer, like trying to delete a single file from the
recycling bin or trying to select an item from the control panel.
It appears they are all stuck the same way.

I know it's a tall order, but after installing SP2, did you try defragging
your HD(s)? I saw some significant slowdown after installing SP2 on one of my
computers. The drive was very fragmented (and I know it was ok before the
update). I haven't had any problems since and haven't noticed any loss of
data. Just an idea.

Yes, the drives are defragged and working fine.
I got tired of messing with it and stuck with the pristine ghost image

Thanks for your input, was hoping someone had a solution.
