explorer.exe not running

We have windows 2000 server, since last month, the explorer.exe could not
run. We could not find explorer.exe in the task manager and we could not run
from task manager manually (File\New task\explorer.exe). If we open some
directory, the application log in the event view shows "the shell stopped
unexpectedly and explorer.exe was restarted".

does someone here help me to fix this issue?

Thanks in advance for your help

You could try and restore explorer.exe from your installation
CD although I suspect that your problem is caused by some
registry corruption. How old is the file c:\Windows\Repair\System?

Thanks for your reply.

Since we installed the server early last year, we haven't update the
c:\Windows\Repair\System. Probably about 1 and half years old.

My strategy to resolve server problems follows this escalation path:
1. Consult my logs to narrow down what changed recently.
2. Consult user groups and FAQs.
3. Restore the registry to a condition just before the problem
occurred. This is the equivalent to the WinXP System Restore.
4. Restore the system drive with the most recent image, which
is never more than 6 months old.
5. Rebuild the server.

Step 4 implies that I have an scheduled process that backs up
the registry on a weekly basis.

Hi Dave,

Could this problem be fixed if we upgrade to Windows 2003 server?
Thansks for your support.

It's possible but it might be cleaner to fix the issue first. Either case
have full backups on hand before you start.

Hi Dave,

After I did in-place upgrade of windows 2000 to the test server, the SQL
service doesn't work. The error shows" the device is not ready". This
production server is our ERP Dabase server, which we install SQL 2000 stnd.
All troubleshooting I must install in the test server first.
Need your further suggestion to fix this issue

Thanks for your help.

Check Event Viewer for errors.
