Explorer constantly closing

Have latest version of explorer and it keeps closing on me only a few seconds
after I open it. The screeen gets shaded and a dialog box says "Internet
Explorer has stopped working", then it says " a problem caused the program
to stop working correctly, windows will close the program and notify you if a
solution is available. Then it is done.

Not sure what to do. Its not like I can really uninstall the program and
reinstall it. My internet connection seems to work fine. My e-mail has not
been affected. Although the problem seemed to coincide with the installation
of a wireless network.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Frank, Thanks so much for your help. Here is the scoop now. My browser
keeps opening to this site http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx and if I stay
at this sight longer than a few seconds, then my browser fails and closes.
However, if I quickly change the address within those few seconds to any
other site, then I am fine. Then I am able from there to surf and browse
normally. I am actually writing from the affected browser now. I changed
my start page in Internet Options, but for whatever reason when I open the
browser it always comes back to the "runonce" page. I can't complete the
setttings requests on that page because my browser inevitably fails. This
is a really weird situation. Any pointers?

Tools | Internet Options | Security
Make sure scripting is not disabled.

If that doesn't fix it, save the part between the lines below and paste into
Notepad. Save as Runonce.reg

---------------------Runonce.reg--------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"RunOnceHasShown"=dword:00000001
"RunOnceComplete"=dword:00000001

-----------------------------------------------------

Right click Runonce.reg and choose Merge.

To change all Windows users at once use

---------------------Runonce2.reg--------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"RunOnceHasShown"=dword:00000001
"RunOnceComplete"=dword:00000001

[ignore the title]
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945385

If no joy...

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable.

3. Reinstall IE7 EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install, and using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the installation
source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered. If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.

I see you have an uninstall link for IE7. Is it for Vista users only? I
have XP. I don't like the IE7 at all and would rather have my IE6 back. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.
