Explorer and XP won't read disk in drive

The system is a year old Dell laptop with internal cd-rw/dv read drive,
running XP with SP2. I added a Mad Dog external DVD/cd drive with Nero 6
software.

The external drive works flawlessly with all software.

The internal drive does not. the internal drive doesn't read either cd or
dvd disks with explorer or any program except Nero, and keeps asking for a
disk to be inserted. The drive is ok, tried a new one, and the computer
spins the disk.

Any thoughts on what's happened and how to get the internal drive back?
Unloading Nero and disconnecting the external drive aren't the answer.

Thanks. Gave it a try, but still haven't got a drive XP recognizes. Any
other suggestions out there?
