Explorer acting funky

Hello to all.

I installed WXP Pro in one of my Dell machines (3.2ghz, 1meg ram) and
tried a shareware program that was supposed to be more detailed than the
standard Windows Explorer.

It was crap and I removed it. Now Explorer takes forever to open files
and just acts strange to the point of crashing at times.

I tried running the WXP "repair" program off the CD and it did it's
thing but no change. How can I "fix" Explorer without reinstalling XP?

Is it as simple as removing the .exe file and replacing it from another
machine running XP?

Thanks for the help on this.

You might want to do repair "re-install" of Internet Explorer as
Internet Explorer is the "base" of Windows Explorer.

If that still does not work, you have not mentioned the "shareware"
program so the ultimate recommendation is to do a recovery install of
your Dell. Recovery CDs will erase the entire Dell hard drives and
place back the original XP that was delivered with the Dell. Backup
all important data and files.

You could try System Restore to an earlier time before you installed the
shareware. Also, you can download and run CCleaner*.

* In spite of what others have said (and will here again, I'm sure), I have
used this program on my home PC for years and never had a problem that I can
attribute to it in any way.

What kind of Dell CD do you have? Does it say "Reinstallation CD"?

No, you shouldn't do that.

If you didn't uninstall the program the proper way (via Control Panel |
Add or Remove Programs or by running the uninstaller executable if
appropriate), you may need to reinstall and *then* uninstall the proper
way.

Otherwise, try booting into Safe Mode and running Windows System
Restore. Pick a date that was before you installed this particular
program.

Daave's questions "What was the name of this program? How did you remove
it?" could be very relevant. If you removed the programme other than through
Add / Remove Programs that could be part of the problem. The solution could
be to reinstall and remove it the correct way.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

windows explorer is an intregal part of windows, putting another program over
the top of it and then attempting to remove the offending software, will
require a repair at the leastoif windows explorer, maybe a complete reinstall
of windows. as always make sure you have a backup of your personal data
before performing repair and or reinstall, as bad thing can and do happen
(often).
