Explanation of templates

Can anyone recommend a good discussion or white paper on templates. I have
looked at several step by step descriptions of how to do one thing or another
with templates, but I have not found anything on template theory. My
knowledge of Word is very limited, and I need to do (what are to me)
complicated mailmerges.

I'm willing to buy a book if I need to, but would prefer to save the time
and expense by finding something online. Thanks.
