existing file replaces file to save in subdirectory

When saving a file to a My Documents subdirectory the file I am attempting to
save is overwritten in the file name box by a highlighted file already
existing in that subdirectory.
Must go back, resave file to My Documents, then open My Docs and manually
move file to the subdirectory.

Hi - this is an Outlook newsgroup. Perhaps you mean to post in one for your
OS?

Or - just rename your file before saving. Sounds like you're selecting an
existing file - in which case this is perfectly normal behavior.

Not an OS problem. Here's teh example: I recieve a doc in an email attachment. I click "save as" and the "My Documents" box comes up. I click to go to a subdirectory of My Documents and when the subdirectory comes up the file name in the box is already populated with an existing doc in that subdirectory. If I click "save" I am told the file already exists because the exising file is already highlighted. I then must go all the way back to the "save as" command and save it in My Documents, then manually transfer the file or doc to the appropriate subdirectory. I am looking for a way to open the subdirectory and have the "save as" file appear in the "Save" box.

Sounds like this is happening because a filename is already highlighted in
the window.

Just type in the new document name before hitting save. You do have that
option. Not sure why an existing file is already highlighted, but you don't
have to do save as. Also, this really isn't an Outlook question, I promise!
It can happen in any windows app.
