The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

If you are 100% sure that the computer is clean, you can try MVP Doug

Sorry about that, I was called to dinnner and did not get to finish my post.
When I am called to dinner I drop everything and run.

Under "normal" circumstances I'd say to run a virus checker...
but since executables won'd run...that does not look like a good
possibility.

One thing to try would be to hit F8 while the machine is booting up
and go to safemode and see if a virsus checker will run there.
If so, there is at least a chance the machine can be disinfected...but my
feeling is that the damage is probably severe.

The real thing to do would be to slave the drive to another machine.
then run an anti-virus checker on it...plus other anti-malware utilites...

then finally...back up the data!

Now the drive can be put back in the original machine...
and if the OS is ruined...I'd format the drive and reinstall windows.

"philo" replied to the OP... I didn't. Surely you know the difference.

I am not here to make up for bad replies.

It wont let me get into safe mode nor will it let me back anything up ?

Doug Knox - [MS-MVP]

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Fixes, File Assocaition Fixes. You'll find a
fix for the EXE file assocation. Most likely you had a viral or some type
of malware infection that hijacked the EXE association. Removal of this
malware often results in the EXE file association becoming "broken".

You've got a virus. Which is to be expected when you:

a) Run without virus protection, or
b) Download "stuff" from the internet and try to run it.

Malware authors DEPEND on these kind of antics.
