Exclusive access to hard drive

Recently I had some problems with my PC that made me want to run Norton Disk Doctor to analyze my hard drive. When I attempt to do so, I get an error message that says "The operating system, or another process, currently has exclusive access to the drive, or some of its files."

Does anyone know how to determine what has exclusive access to the drive and how to make it non-exclusive?

I don't believe you can lever Windows far enough away from the drive to do
this sort of operation while Windows is running. What's normal is that the
application concerned will ask if you want to schedule the operation at the
next boot (before Windows starts). Otherwise, you may be able to run Disk
Doctor (or chkdsk, etc) if you turn off the option to fix errors.

You may run Norton Disk Doctor from a bootable floppy. You DON'T run it
on the drive you boot off off.

You must be using a NORTON Disk Doctor greater than version 2001. Starting
with version 2002, it should work.

Also, be avaised that the BOOT disk method "may" not work correctly since
the boot disk would likely boot MS-DOS. MS-DOS will not access any NTFS
partitions.
