Assume a public domain name of http://www.company.com/division
Can MS Exchange Server 2007 (or perhaps earlier Exchange versions, if
this particular issue has not changed) be setup using that URL for the
external domain name?

Externally, you can create any name to point to anything. However there are
default names Exchange uses, depending on the version of Exchange.

Exchange 2003's default URL would assume to be able to access a subfolder,
or rather a subsite called /exchange or /owa, depending onthe version. So if
you were to create a resource (host) name, such as "mail" or "webmail" under
company.com, then you would access it by http://mail.company.com/exchange or
http://webmail.company.com/exchange . Using the same resource name,
Exchange 2007's would be http://mail.company.com/owa or
http://webmail.company.com/owa.

Therefore if you want to use http://www.company.com/division, you could
probably would NEED to redirect to http://mail.company.com/owa. With either,
you can publish any name except the /owa or /exchange portion or Exchange
will reject it.

But then again from what I'm reading into your post because of the lack of
detail you provided concerning the current setup, it would appear you are
using the Exchange server as your company's website webserver too? Not a
good practice. It may interfere with Exchange's requirements.

Can you elaborate a bit for us?
