I was trying to speed up the opening of excel (as it is really slow) and came across the following advice.

"Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types, scroll down to and
select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Excel files), click Advanced,
select Open entry, click the edit Button.
Now uncheck "Use DDE" and then put your cursor in the Application box,
arrow all the way to the right and put in "%1" (include the quote
marks), IF there is /dde remove it. Then OK you way out. Things should
work quickly again."

Now I can't open excel file even although I undid the changes I made! Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300)

Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.

System Model: Latitude D420

BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A03

Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU U2500 @ 1.20GHz (2 CPUs)

Memory: 1526MB RAM

I have also Adaware, Spybot and Sophos antivirus. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

The easiest thing that might undo this problem is to do a system restore within Windows XP:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

You won't lose any documents, but it will remove any applications or settings from the data you select to restore to. :) Be sure to read all of the details to see what will and won't be changed.

Just pick a date before you made the changes, and it should go back to the way it was before :thumb:
