Excel Version Conversion - HELP!

I'm using Excell 2007 - but download data from an external source that's in
Excel 2003. In the past, before moving to Excel 07, I could manipulate the
data, cut and paste into other documents without having any difficulties.
However, now that we switched to 2007, I can manipulate the data, but if I
try to do a "Paste Special", when coping parts of the data to new worksheet,
I get a dialog box that states that the data is a "Microsoft Office Excel
Worksheet Object" and then gives me several options to select from. Even if
I pick Microsoft Excel 8.0 Format, it still won't allow me to copy and do a
paste special. If I try to do a Paste Special in another tab in the same
document, the Paste Special works fine. Every once in a while, I must hit
the right combination of what to do because it suddenly allows me to do a
copy and paste special from worksheet to worksheet like it should be done. I
don't know if it's the way I save the files, or what. I've tried just about
everything that I can think of 1) saving the file as a XLSX file, saving it
as XLS.... I'm just about at my wits end trying to manipulate the files.
Nothing seems to work. I'm too lazy to have to modify the column widths
everytime I need to copy the data..
If anyone has any input on what is occurring and if there's anything I can
do about it, I would be ever so grateful for any suggestions!

It sounds like the problem you are running into is because you have your
workbooks open in separate instances of Excel. To use Paste Special
"normally", you need to have both workbooks open within the same instance of
Excel.

Just to make sure, if I save the downloaded document as .XLSX file (which
saves it in 2007) close it, then reopen it as well as a blank 2007 worksheet,
it will work? I thought I had tried that - but maybe in the hub-bub of
everything, I didn't do it in that order...... Let me do that and I'll get
back to you.

I retryed it. When the file is downloaded from the external site, it will
not allow me to change it to a XLSX file. So I save in XLS, close the file,
reopen the file (indicates its in "compatibility mode") and resave it as
XLSX. I closed the file, reopened it, and it came up with the following
dialog box "Excel found unreadable content in filename.xlsx. Do you want to
recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this
workbook, check yes." I clicked yes. Then it comes up with a dialog box
that says, "Repairs to filename.xlsx - Removed records: merge cells from
/xl/worksheets/sheet2.xml part". The worksheet now indicates that it is a
"Repaired" worksheet. I save and close the file. I reopen the worksheet.
It is now a XLSX file. I open a new worksheet. So I have two XLSX documents
open. But I still cannot copy and paste special into the new document. It
still gives me the dialog box that is mentioned below. It will not allow me
access to the paste special options. Am I still doing something wrong?
