Excel - more than one instance open at once?

I would like to have several worksheets open in seperate
instances of Excel rather than in one instance. In other
words, I need to compare one worksheet against another and
having both in one instance makes it difficult to do this.

I have searched but cannot find where I can configure the
software to do this. Can you help?

not quite sure but goto 'Tools - Options - General' and check 'Windows
in taskbar'

Judy, if you want to open workSHEETS from a single workBOOK in separate
windows, pull down the Window menu and select New Window to open the current
workbook in a second window.

Then, if you want, you can also select Window > Arrange > Windows of active
workbook, and either Tiled, Horizontal, Vertical, or Cascade to arrange the
windows on screen. These commands appear in Excel 2003, and are similar if
not the same in other versions.

In addition to the previous suggestions, here are two different ways.

#1. From the Windows "Start" menu, use the cascaded menu to open Excel.
Once Excel is running, use "File >> Open" to open an Excel file. Repeat
these steps for the second file.

#2. Point to an Excel file on the desktop or in a folder. With the right
mouse button, click "Send To >> Excel". Repeat the steps for the second
file.

For #2, you might not see "Excel" in the "Send To" menu at first. To add it
there, put a shortcut to the Excel program into the folder
C:\Windows\SendTo\

By the way, if you have two files of the same name in different folders,
this allows you to have both open at the same time.
