Excel data in Access Linked Table

I have a spreadsheet which is continuously being updated and when I link it
to Access as an attached table it gives one of the fields a numeric type when
I want it to be text. I can not link it to the existing tables as numeric
because I get type mismatch and also some of the data starts with a 0 which
numeric fields strip off.

I have tried formatting the column of cells in Excel to text but this does
not make a difference. Does anyone know a way round this?

I have solved this by putting an apostrophe in front of the text in the Excel
cell. Access now interprets as a text field and I can successfully link in
queries to my access tables.
