Excel Closes unexpectedly over Shared Drive

We have a shared folder on a server that is used by a very small department
(2/3 people). This folder contains a number of excel files which are used by
all dept members. One file is used day to day all day long, and some file are
used every so often as a sort of template (though they are incorrectly not in
template format).

The problem is that sporadically the users will get an message that an error
has unexpectedly occured and that Excel is closing the document. This could
happen several times throughout the day or maybe not at all. It seems to have
no pattern for when it crashes.

We have tried running several "detect and repair"s. Even reinstalled Excel
on one of the users (although it was coincidence that this resolved the issue
for a few days).

The only thing in common is that all the files are stored in the same remote
location.

Any ideas?

Is this on the same file? If so, is that a shared workbook?

This happens to more than one document. All documents this happens to are
located in the same folder on the network drive (file server) - public. The
workbooks themselves are not marked as shared.

I strongly suspect this may be a network problem. Are they by any chance
getting the error when trying to save the file or when trying to close Excel?

Sometimes it happens when trying to save, but mostly it happens when they are
in the middle of working on the document.
