Excel Changes last-Modified Date

Is there a way to stop Excel from changing the last-modified date of
every file that is opened (even when no changes are made and save is
never pressed)? This is really screwing us up in the office because we
are looking through a ton of old files for one that was last-modified on
a certain date. When we open a suspect file it CHANGES THE DATE!!!! Make
it stop.

It is only temporary, if you don't save it it reverst back when you close
it.

Perhaps it is a problem with network drives, but it does not revert.

Not only does it permanently change the last-modified date, but it
permanently changes the creation date to the opening date/time as well.

Indeed, locally it does not occur (it does revert).

We had this happen a longgggggggg time ago. But the problem went away after a
while. I always thought that the IT folks did something to the network to fix
it. (But I have no idea what that may have been.)

I've changed some files to read only just to stop this from happening.
It seems to be time dependent or dependent on some other event
on the network because it only happens about 10% of the time.
I can't figure out a pattern.

You could use a dedicated viewer to view the Excel files. QuickView
(Plus) springs to mind, fmView also works crudely; there are probably
more.

I would not recommend to install the Microsoft Excel Viewer
(<http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx>): I
distinctly remember how it screwed my existing Excel installation.
