Excel and linked files

Just wondering if anyone can help
I am running a spreadsheet at work, which has 2 files linked to it.
On a computer running windows 2000 and Excel 2000 the links work fine.
However, on a computer running Win98SE and Excel 2000, the links only work
if the linked files are open when the main spreadsheet is opened. If the 2
linked files are not open, Excel crashes when it tries to link them.
Does anyone know what causes this, and whether it can be rectified?
If it helps, all 3 files are on a network drive.
Many thanks
Neal

First things to check would be consistency of Excel versions. Are both machines
running the same service pack of Excel 2000? If not, and if the older Excel
version is on the Win98 machine, start by installing the latest service pack(s).

For the heck of it, also delete everything from your temp directory. It's either
C:\Temp or C:\Windows\Temp.

If that doesn't fix things, how much free memory do both machines have when
trying to open the main workbook?

Never attach files.
Snip unnecessary quoted text.
Never multipost (though crossposting is usually OK).
Don't change subject lines because it corrupts Google newsgroup archives.

Yes, it is the same machine... version 2002 of Excel... weird... does NOT
hold formatting... only contenst or values!
