Recently, a Personal.bak file started opening with my Personal.xls. It's not
in the XLSTART folder. How do I get rid of it?

Thanks,
Barb Reinhardt

Hi Barb,
Have you checked Tools | Options | General tab to see if you have an entry
in "At start, open all files in... " box
Or, Could you use Search to locate and delete this file

Nothing is entered in the Tools-Options-General for "At start, open all files
in ... "

It also didn't show up in a search. I ended up looking the properties for
the opened file (which I should have done in the first place) and found where
it was.

Thanks

Excel does not create *.bak files..........backups are *.xlk files so don't
know how personal.bak would be created.

A typical installation of Office will have two XLSTART folders.

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\XLSTART

Have you checked the correct one of these?

Also check the contents of Tools>Options>General "at start up, open all
files in"

It is best to leave this dialog box empty.

If indeed you have a personal.xlk being created, you can open personal.xls
and check its file save properties and uncheck the "always create a backup"
before re-saving.
