Excel 2003 can't change cell color

I recently installed Office 2003. All programs seem to work fine except excel.
I select a groups of cells to change the color, select the color and nothing happens
I have checked and the work sheet is not protected. I can not change gridline colors either. I have uninstalled 2003, reinstalled office 97 and it works fine. After reinstalling office 2003 again, I still have the same problem

If this is a problem with all files with coloured cells, the high
contrast setting may be turned on. There is information in the
following MSKB article:
