Excel 2002/2003 can not open xls file says "may be read only"

I have a file i use daily. Today I went to open it and Excel returns a
dialogue box that says:

"filename.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be
trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored
on is not responding"

I also synchronnized this file on my other machines and they all return the
same error. I can open the file with notepad but it is text and chiberish.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Running XP SP2 and Office XP on some machines and Office 2003 on others.

doesn't work. I am running the newer versions of excel. So far notepad is
the only program that can open the file without the read-only dialogue box
showing up. The read-only would be okay except excel can not open the file at
all.

its on local machines.

I used the open and repair function within excel but it was only able to
recover three worksheets out of the ten in the file. Better than nothing
but i would still like the whole file.

Maybe openoffice would be more successful:

http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD

its on local machines.
