everything suddenly mono

Hello. I have a friend who suddenly hears everything in mono. He did a
speaker test and everything sounds mono, even a stereo cd. I told him to
check the balance and it is correct, the slider is in the middle on all
devices. Help. I'm stumped.

Would the stereo jack be inserted completely?

Yes. I had him check the plugs to. This all started after he played a file.
It was fine until he played a stereo cd. After that, everything was mono
including things that were supposed to be panned hard left and hard right.
