event viewer and task scheduler unavailable

No information is shown when I try to access application, system, or security
logs in event viewer. Clicking on the category generates error message
"Unable to complete the operation on 'Application.' The interface is
unknown." Trying to start the scheduler results in error: "The dependency
service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."

Both issues appear (to me) to be related to some sort of OS bug (error 1717,
from what I've found in web searches), but I'm unable to determine how to fix
either.

WinXP SP2, recent system changes are removal of Avast! antivirus, and
installing Office 2003 and McAfee Security center. Thanks for any suggestions.

"The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."
This text comes from System Error 1075. A number of reports linking it
with uninstalling Norton Anti-Virus so it would seem removing Avast
could well be the cause.

I think you need to check out Services (Start, Administrative Tools,
Services ) to see whether one or more are not running as they should.
Are any set to run automatically but have not started. In particular
look at Error Reporting Service, Event Log, Remote Procedure Call and
DHCP Client. If you double click on the Service look at the Dependency
tab. Initially the boxes show nothing as they take a moment to display
the information.

How recently did you remove Avast?

Thanks for the response, Gerry.

Error Reporting Service, Remote Procedure Call, and DHCP Client are all
started with startup type set to automatic. Event Log service is not present.
When trying to check dependencies of the other three services I encounter the
dependency service error you quoted below and cannot retrieve any info.

The task scheduler service is listed, startup type automatic, but it's not
starting automatically. Whenever I attempt to start it I receive the 1717
error.

Thanks for the links to the services chart. I can see that services.exe is
running in task manager, but event log service has been removed somehow from
the services listing.

I uninstalled Avast on 10/20/05 and installed McAfee the same day.

What steps should I take next to reinstall event log and re-enable
scheduler? Thanks.

I have received this comment from Bill James:

"Services can be deleted in the Registry and will then not show up in
the Services console. Checking here, it looks like the key is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog. If that
doesn't exist you might be able to export that from another box, then
import on the troubled machine."

Is the key there or missing? To check Start, Run, type "regedit" without
quotes and hit Enter.

Eventlog registry key is there. Application REG-SZ key data column value
reads "mnmsrvc." Security and System have 'value not set' for the same data
value.
I may be able to export/import from another box from work later this week,
but hope to be able to fix/reinstall from my WinXP CD or the web at home.
Thanks.

Check the data column for the level above Application etc.
for these for discrepancies

Image Path %SystemRoot%\system32\services.exe
Error Control 0x00000001 (1)
PlugPlayServiceType 0x00000003 (3)
Start 0x00000002 (2)
Type 0x00000020 (32)

Offline for a few days. I checked the data column at the eventlog level and
there's only one entry - name=default, type=reg_sz, data=value not set.

Wondering if there's any way to reinstall or repair event viewer and task
scheduler from the WinXP CD? Thanks.
