Hi Wes, and thanks.
This is all that would come up, that shows me that the computer is
configured as a work station.
Could it be some application that got dorked by SP2? Everything seems to be
working fine except for the DCOM & Perfnet warnings in the event viewer.
Searching for answers on the net just gives endless reasons why, but no real
fixes.
Thank you for your time,
Treeman

IMHO DCOM errors in the Event Viewer are annoying, but nothing to worry
about.

Is the Workstation service running on your machine?

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm#Workstation

LanmanWorkstation. The Client for Microsoft Networks component is actually
the Workstation
service.

for Microsoft Networks | OK | Close

[[Creates and maintains client network connections to remote servers. If
this service is stopped, these connections will be unavailable. If this

Yup, I figured that one out too. The perfnet error events are what have me
stymied.
I just can't link the event with the application, service, or which part of
SP2 needs to be tweaked.
Very frustrating . . . do you know of any other web forums for SP2 discussion?
Thanks,
JP

Hi JP

I don't know if it's any consolation but I too get exactly the same thing as
you do. I get the same message as you do in the Event Log from source
Perfmon. However I am not on SP2. I have XP Pro (Devil's Own) + SP1.

Following the advice in this thread I have enabled the network Client
component and that has brought back my Workstation service.

I had originally disabled it because Steve Gibson over in www.grc.com used
to be very unhappy about the extra comms components over and above TCP/IP.
He argues that they are simply unnecessary. See http://www.grc.com/su-
fixit.htm for his diagram the Client For Microsoft Networks should be
removed. However that was before XP. I did the old trick of "unbinding" on
my XP even though it didn't need it.

Steve Gibson's may be the place to go looking for answer because, by co-
incidence, he has a tool for stopping DCOM. Now I don't know what DCOM is
but it has appeared in this thread. Maybe it's just co-incidence or maybe
it is relevant. I don't know.

You can follow Gibson's discussion forum on this on his open news server at
and thegroup is called "grc.shieldsup". A web interface
to this group is at
http://news.grc.com/news.exe?cmd=xover&group=grc.shieldsup&utag=.

I am going to keep on looking for an answer. If you find one at some point
then please let me know by email at this address (remove the tune first):

Thanks.
