Event ID 6008 Previous Shutdown was Unexpected

I have a Win2k SP2 server been running in Production for 2 years, on the 30th
and 31st Dec 2004 the server restarted itself with a Event ID 6008. This has
not happenend before. The eventlog goes back to December 2002 when the server
was built. Any ideas what might cause this.

If no BSOD's occur (Event ID: 1001 Source: Save Dump), then it may be a
power problem. I would look at a possible faulty (or undersized) pc power
supply, UPS, bad battery, or the circuit feeding the outlet that the pc is
plugged into.

Thanks Dave,

There is no BSOD, the Compaq Proliant ML 530 just restarts itself. I get
notified of the reboot through HP/Compaq Insight Manager. The server has not
changed for 2 years as I say. No memory dump is created either, no time it
just reboots itself.

OK then I would look into the power issues I mentioned.

Dave,

The 6008 happened again last night. The 4th time since Dec 30. Can I shed
some new light on the server set-up.

1) The Proliant ML530 has twin power supplies.
2) It is in a rack with another ML530 sharing the same 4-gang mains.
3) The other ML530 has not restarted at all.

Our maintenance company will swap out the 2 power supplies in any case,
apparently they are hot swappable. We are planning to go ahead and do this.

Shutdown History is now:

Event ID Date
6008 30/12/04 15:45
6008 31/12/04 06:44
6008 06/01/05 10:21
6008 12/01/05 17:51

Regards,

Simon

I'm guessing it is some sort of hardware failure. Possibly the mobo. You
might open it up and check all connectors.

We have the same server "Compaq Proliant ML 530"

From my point its should be som MS updates that starting this?

also our problem started few month back....

Pottan,

Yes our EventID 6008 was resolved by replacing both of the power supplies.
Yes both were swapped out for new ones by my hardware support company. Very
strange but it worked.

The probelm seemed to be resolved with the hot fix and some work with
DELL updates to the bios. There was one occassion of a reboot after
the fixes, but I can attribute that to (unauthorized) human
intervention (well, I can *hope* taht is what happened!).

I am not sure what caused (or is causing) the problem. It might be an
MS update. I really have no clue at this point, but as I said, I think
I resolved the problem.
