Ethernet dies when Internet Explorer closes

I'm having a wierd problem. When I'm surfing w/ Internet Explorer
immediately after bootup, I have no problems. However, when I close
Internet Explorer, my ethernet dies. I am unable to even ping anyone.
All network applications stop functioning. Restarting Internet
Explorer does not help, either, it just tells me that it can't find the
host. The only thing that works is rebooting the computer. Any ideas?

are you on dialup or broadband?

if on dialup in your advanced dialup settings do you have the option
"disconnect when connection may no longer be required" ticked?
