I recently formatted my compaq laptop but I am missing the ethernet
controller driver, I already tried the hp site with no luck, any suggestions?
Thanks

The ethernet is probably on board and as such contained in the chipset
drivers
The exact model number is?

With your "exact" laptop model number, you will be able the locate the
entire list of drivers available for your laptop. However, if the
laptop was never delivered with XP on it, HP may not list an XP driver.

The laptop is a compaq nx9010, I downloaded after I reformatted it all the
drivers with the exception of the ethernet driver, I don't know how to find
out the motheboard's brand name so I could contact the manufacturer, do I
need to open the laptop? I tried the Bios and all the network drivers that HP
lists under this model but none of them worked

If Belarc Adviser doesn't identify the Ethernet device, the following
suggestions may (or may not) help.

My first suggestion is to visit the HP System Check for Notebook PCs at
http://h20239.www2.hp.com/techcenter/HP_SystemCheck/hp_syscheck.htm.
Click on "Check my system" and upon completion of the scan, follow the
instructions. Hopefully, the scan will identify missing or out-of-date
drivers - and provide download instructions.

If that doesn't work, open Control Panel, followed by System / Hardware
/ Device Manager. Look for any items with a yellow question mark, which
might indicate missing drivers - particularly under Network Adaptors
and/or System Devices. If you have problem devices, right click on the
device name and select "Update Driver". Then, allow the wizard to
search the web for suitable drivers. A suitable driver might be
available from the Microsoft driver library.

Incidentally, my Compaq nx6310 has a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated
Controller. If Device Manager on your laptop shows the same Ethernet
hardware, you can download a suitable driver from
http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/downloaddrivers.php. You
will also find a FAQ at
www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/faq_drivers.php

As a last resort, you could download the trial version of Driver
Detective from http://www.drivershq.com/. When you use that program to
scan your system, it will probably identify out-of-date and missing
drivers. If it identifies a missing driver for your Ethernet
connection, you can click on the download icon to download the correct
driver for your Ethernet network connection. However, you do need to
subscribe to the service, before Driver Detective will allow you to
download any drivers.

If the missing driver is an Intel chipset driver, you will need to
follow special instructions, before you unzip and install the driver.

I already tried Belarc Adviser and Driver Detective, of course both charge
for the info. The details on the ethernet controller are as follows: Device
Instance Id, PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0013&SUBSYS_CB2114B9&REV_01\4&22B770D&0&0050,
now in case I need the Intel chipset driver, where do I find it?

The drivers are on the HP site, specific to your model.
You should also have either a recovery partition on your PC, or the disks
required to set your system back to factory supplied state, which includes
all drivers
If all else fails use the HP support chat option, its free

Are you sure you have quoted the correct Device ID for this particular
piece of hardware? A Google search against
"PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0013&SUBSYS_CB2114B9" suggests that particular ID
might relate to a Wireless Adapter, not an Ethernet controller.
Furthermore, the PCI\VEN_168C prefix might indicate that you the device
is a Samsung Ethernet controller - NOT Intel.

However, there is far too much guesswork here - and DL has offered
excellent advice.

If you can't obtain the drivers from HP (or from your recovery disks or
the recovery partition), I still believe it would be worth downloading
the trial version of Driver Detective. You don't have to pay for a free
scan - and it should identify the device. A free scan should also tell
you whether the correct (and latest) drivers are available from Driver
Detective. If they are, you can pay for a subscription. I don't know
the cost of a lifetime subscription to Driver Detective, but when I
subscribed several years ago, it was not expensive.

One other thing occurs to me. You have provided the device ID - so
presumably, this information came from Device Manager. Is there a
yellow exclamation mark against this device in Device Manager? And what
do you see, if you right click on the name of the device and select
Properties?

The Status Information may help to identify the precise nature of any
problem. For instance, does the status message indicate that the device
is working properly, or does it give the status as disabled, or does it
point to a different problem (such as no driver). If the device is
merely disabled, you may need to do nothing more than click on "enable".

I would also add that if this device is part of your system, as supplied by
hp, then attmpting to source a driver from a third party source could cause
all sorts of problems.
Laptop drivers should nearly allways be sourced from the Laptop
manufacturer, particularly large OEM's as its often the case that the device
has been modified for their specific requirements.

Excellen information from Bob Lucas and DL, I really appreciated!! I
contacted HP"s chat online and because I am out of warranty they want to
charge me for the info, this is what device manager shows: Other Devices with
a yellow question mark on top, underneath it Ethernet Controller with a
yellow question mark and a yellow exclamation mark on it, Properties as
follows: General/Device Status the drivers for this device are not installed
(Code 28) Device Usage: Use this device (enable) Driver Details:No driver has
been loaded for this device, Details: Device Instance Id then PCI_168 etc etc
Resources: This device is not using any resources because it has a problem. I
have done formatting and reloading of the drivers many times before in
different computers but I am really puzzled abotu this one specially because
the HP site under support and drivers and listing the laptop model it gives
me a list of drivers, example Bios, Audio, Graphiic, Graphics Intel,
Keyboard, Modem, Network, etc. Under Network it lists 7 different drivers, I
already tried all 7 and none of them worked! Of course I am missing the
recovery disks with the drivers in them, it is really a challenge. Thanks
again, I will keep on looking.

Looking at the HP website for this model, there is only one 10/100-
Base-T ethernet driver listed (the others are wireless or infrared
drivers). That driver is labeled "National Semiconductor DP83815/816
10/100 MacPhyter NDIS 5.0 Miniport Driver for Windows 2000/XP". You
should see this device in the Device Manager. If not, you probably
have a hardware problem.

I agree entirely.

The computer manufacturer should always be the first port of call, if a
specific driver is not available on the recovery disk or recovery
partition,

However, the HP website does not list Ethernet drivers for this
particular notebook. That is why I suggested Driver Detective, just in
case the OP cannot obtain the missing driver from HP.

The Driver Detective database has been expanded - and now includes
special drivers for many HP computers. The OP's notebook model is
listed on Driver Detective. Consequently, the database will probably
include suitable drivers (as opposed to generic versions).

If the OP downloads the trial version of Driver Detective, he should
configure the program to offer specific drivers for his particular
notebook model. The relevant parameters are:

Manufacturer: HP
Family: Compaq Notebook
Model: nx9100

I visited the HP download page at http://www.hp.com/#Support and
searched for drivers for the nx9100.

For this model, HP offer a wide range of drivers for the Win 2000, Win
XP, Win XP Home Edition, Win XP Media Center, Win XP Professional & Win
XP Tablet PC Edition operating systems.

The OP didn't specify which Win XP variant he is using. Although I
viewed the options for each Win XP variant, I did not see any drivers
for the Ethernet Controller. I checked again today - with the same
result.

Am I looking in the wrong place? If so, I'm sure it will help the OP,
if you could point him to a precise location, where he can download the
correct Ethernet driver

Well, I was finally able to fix the problem, a friend of mine had the hp
drivers disk so that took care of it. Thanks to everybody
for all the help.
